The Wincanton Film Society was launched in September 2004 with the showing of "Cold Mountain." From day one we were overwhelmed by the level of support given my our local communities. Membership grew steadily throughout the year till it broke the 200 barrier. A successful year indeed.

Since our opening the society has gone from strength to strength and as well as providing films for our members we have branched out and provide screening services for various organisations.

For 2008/9 we will be on the road woith ScreenBites visiting many village halls throughout Dorset. Our first screening of the year will be a special evening of Food and Film in Wincanton at our normal venue (King arthur's Community School.

(Society techies assembling our new screen)

The aim of the society is to show the best films from around the world. This is a great opportunity to see both domestic and internationally acclaimed films, some of which may not be featured in the normal high street cinemas. At each viewing the audience is asked to give their opinion of the film, and thankfully the overall opinion shows that to date the society committee has done a good job.

We do listen to your comments, but please remember that we then have to put those comments into context with our society mandate. To be able to qualify for the support we were given we have to meet specific criteria. This does occasionally affect our selection.

We can't afford to simply add in everyone's favourite film, or stick to one style. That's why we have both domestic and overseas films. We do understand when some complain about subtitled films. They can indeed be more difficult to follow because of switching between looking at the film and trying to follow the text at the bottom of the screen.

However we must also take onboard that some of those films are brilliant. In fact one or two of those few films have been very close to the best rating we have had since starting. So please bear with us as we seek to bring a varied programme which we believe will both satisfy and challenge us.

(Members and friends arriving)

Films are screened monthly on alternate Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the season (See programme guide) Being based at King Arthur's Community School with it's excellent facilities in the PEC (Performance Enhancement Centre), is a great bonus and is much appreciated by our members and friends. We are immensely grateful to the British Federation for Film Societies SW and especially to their Development Officer, Paul Schilling, who guided us through our exciting first year, and continues to be a good support to us. Like any good organisation we must also give grateful thanks to our hard working committee for their unselfish work throughout the season, remembering that when the season ends, their work continues. If it didn't there would be a great new season programme to view.

We also owe a vote of thanks to all those folks who don't bask in the lime light. They simply work hard with servant hearts behind the making sure that when the guests arrived, everything was ready for them, and making sure that film night is a very pleasant experience for all. We need more volunteers like this, so - Contact us and ask what you can to to help. Last, but not least, we want to say a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to a very special section of The Wincanton Film Society.
