This has been such a fantastic book that I am concerned that the film will wreck it for me – I sincerely hope not though, and look forward to finding out.
Well Penny, did the film live up to your expectations?
Much better than I expected. It managed to give equal balance to the two main story lines in the book and remain true to them. The atmosphere of the Deep South was apparent throughout – sometimes reminiscent of ‘The Heat of the Night’. Although much had to be cut from the book in order not to have a film 6 hours long, this was not noticeable and some of the dialogue was lifted verbatim.
Just a shame that the sound quality was not always good at times – I don’t know whether this was because it was an old film, or an accoustic problem of PEC or our equipment, but it did not spoil my enjoyment – a truly great film of a truly great book.
Describe what you mean by poor sound. Do you mean there was crackling, or was was it muffled? That would help us to check this out. We need to have the information so that we can make sure we don’t have any technical issues with our equipment. I know that the DVD stated that sound was “Mono”, and it is an old film, so if it was duplicated from the original old movie with the sound of the day, it may be simply that it was indeed old sound.
I gather that the book is very popular in schools. I’ve seen the film, but never read the book.
